Article: The Cemu Security PSA and Why RetroDECKโ€™s Approach Suddenly Makes a Lot of Sense

RetroDECK Team Comment:

Bugs, vulnerabilities and malicious actors will always exist. While we strive to mitigate risks, this does not eliminate them entirely. Risk is inherent in all systems and we remain committed doing our best to mitigate them. However, it is important to remember that this is a hobby project driven by fewer than a handful of volunteers and the situation is likely similar for Cemu. Everyone involved acts out of pure passion, which makes it particularly disheartening to witness the FOSS community being targeted and exploited in such a manner.

We have also frequently avoided critical issues by delaying the new component releases into RetroDECK, opting instead to wait for initial hotfixes. Notable examples include the Azahar emulator bug that corrupted save files and critical stability issues in a PPSSPP release. We are generally waiting one to two weeks after a major version release to allow for patches, rather than immediately consider the initial .0 version into of a tiny RetroDECK patch.

For bleeding-edge components without stable releases (RPCS3, Vita3K, etc..), the policy defaults to the latest verified "working" version.

No security method is foolproof, whether ours or other FOSS projects. While we strive to prioritize safety within our limited resources and available information, we cannot guarantee absolute immunity. Just because we have not been targeted yet, does not mean we are immune by future attacks by malicious actors.

Therefore as always, users should remain vigilant.

Development Update: 0.11.0

We are in active development on the upcoming major update, 0.11.0.

New Client: Satellaview+

satellaview logo

As we talked about in a previous blog post, version 0.11.0 will introduce RetroDECK's first client-type component: Mudlet. That enables users to play Multi-User Dungeon (MUD) games directly within the RetroDECK environment.

We are pleased to announce our second client component to include in RetroDECK in 0.11.0: Satellaview+.

This client revives St. Giga's historic satellite broadcast platform, Satellaview, granting access to legacy content including exclusive games, digital magazines and new original broadcast features.

We've collaborated closely with the Satellaview+ team for quite some time to make this happen.

To access events, games, features, and more, you'll need to check their broadcasting schedule and connect at the right time.

The setup consists of two components: a tuner that downloads the current programming and a client that establishes the connection.

Satellaview+ RetroDECK Event

We're also hoping to organize a Satellaview+ - RetroDECK Event sometime after the launch of version 0.11.0, where you will be able to talk with RetroDECK Developer NPCs for a limited time!

So stay tuned.

New Utility: Ludusavi - Cloud Sync / Backup

Ludusavi logo

One of the most requested features in the RetroDECK backlog is a dedicated solution for cloud syncing various data. Our goal is to deliver this in version 0.11.0 in one way or another.

We are currently evaluating Ludusavi as the backend system component to power this feature. By building custom tools around it, we aim to give users granular control over their sync preferences: from syncing save files alone to backing up your entire library or other misc data.

New Utility: Grout - RomM Sync

Grout logo

Grout is the native client for RomM to download games, cover art, BIOS files and synchronized save states directly from your own RomM server.

This works as an alternative to Ludusavi whereas it prioritizes broader cloud storage and generic FTP backup solutions (and we want to support both).

The RetroDECK and RomM teams have been meme-ing about this for years, to have some sort of direct integration to RomM.

We're currently evaluating the best path forward by integrating Grout directly into RetroDECK.

Supporting RetroDECK natively will require additional development in Grout, which will take some time and it might not be ready for 0.11.0.

๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ We are pleased to soon introduce a dedicated direct line to RomM. Enabling users with heightened frustration levels to talk directly to the ROM Manager.

Notice: We won't be providing our own hosting solution

We have no plans to develop our own hosting infrastructure or introduce fees for hosting services. Everything within RetroDECK remains as always completely free.

Instead, we prioritize your freedom of choice.

You can utilize any storage solution compatible with Ludusavi, ranging from major cloud providers to a self-hosted server at home. Additionally, you can seamlessly integrate with your existing RomM instance via Grout.

โ˜€๏ธ Summer Break

Per tradition, the RetroDECK blog pauses for the summer season as the team enjoys time off with family and friends.

While we originally hoped to launch 0.11.0 before the summer, but the sheer scale of the new features combined with some real-life life events (work, family, you know how it is...) means we need a more time.

That said we wish you a pleasant and refreshing summer and look forward to sharing new news at a later time.

As always, if you want to help with development, join the ๐Ÿ’™-i-want-to-help channel on Discord, or reach out to us on Matrix or other socials.

A big thank you to everyone for your continued support ๐Ÿฆˆ.
